BBC reports that the Leeds Memory Group, through the help of hypnosis, are able to recreate the sensations of deja vu. Deja vu is caused when the brain accidently refers to an object or instance as familiar. LMG is using hypnotic suggestion to make objects seem familiar to patients even though they have never seen them before.
They are essentially reverse-engineering deja vu to discover what causes it. It is reported that in some cases deja vu can be so distressing it can lead to depression. I myself have never found my instances of deja vu to take me down that dark road.
