Who Loves Them Some Doki Doki Panic?

Is that Super Mario Bros. 2? Yeah it is. What is that next to it? Doki Doki Panic? What the hell is Doki Doki Panic? Apparently Doki Doki Panic is the U.S. version of Super Mario Bros. 2.. According to an article on About.com Nintendo thought that their version of SMB2 was too hard for Western gamers. It seems that they didn't make many changes in DDP to "westernize" it as SMB2. It appears they redrew sprites. That's about it. There were four different characters in DDP, and each one had his/her own abilities. So, all of you Western gamers that enjoy Super Mario Bros. 2 really enjoy Doki Doki Panic.

Here's something to chew on. Think about all the main staples of Mario characters that have come from DDP, Shy Guy and Birdie for example. Now, are they instituted in modern Japanese versions of Mario games or only Western versions? Does Nintendo of Japan look back at the SMB2/DDP situation and laugh at us? Hmmmm? Why Shigeru Miyamoto? Whyyyyy?

That's just plain eerie, man. My childhood memories are crumbling around me. I've been lied to...by Nintendo!

I had seen the Lost Levels on the SNES, but never played it. Quite the interesting history lesson about SMB2 and Doki Doki Panic, though. Doesn't diminish my love of the game, but does bring up an odd point why it was so different from the rest. Cool find.
